Beatrice has always been a lively and extremely active child. From a very young age she distinguished herself with her artistic talent, her enthusiasm and her sporting capabilities, including participating in the Italian National Fencing Championships. On the 20th of November 2008, at the age of 11, she contracted meningitis. This caused septicaemia and within a few hours her body was devastated with internal haemorrhaging. The following 4 months were spent in intensive care and plastic surgery at the Paediatric Hospital in Padova where she endured indescribable pain with the amputation of both hands just below the elbow and both legs just below the knee. The amputations were performed through a series of difficult operations that were carried out as and when her condition deteriorated and her life was in danger.
Her story is tragic yes, but it’s not a sad story. It’s inspiring, motivational, and teaches us all to make the most of what we have, to live life to the fullest in the best way we can.
